Independent Notes: ‘Ultimately, I want people in office that will continue to give me that support when I come calling at their door.’

As I write this column, I don’t know the outcome of the 2026 Primary Elections.

What I do know is that Wyoming’s elections are decided at this point, aside from the non-partisan races that come with a decision in November.

RELATED: LINCOLN COUNTY PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS –

We have a lot of interest this time in the local county races and as it’s time to put a new governor in the Capitol, so we’re tracking that race and the race to fill open seats in the congressional delegation.

Dan Dockstader serves in the Wyoming Legislature as the Senator for District 16. He and his wife Kim have operated the Star Valley Independent for over 40 years.

While this is decided with elections, my concern centers more on working relationships with those that will fill those positions.

I have avoided political squabbles along the way in order to maintain professional, working relationships with those holding office.

As an example, many years ago when it came time to help Simplot with some push back from federal agencies, I called on Gov. Dave Fruedenthal to help me. We shared different political faiths but I wanted our governor’s help and went to his office and asked for it.

He acknowledged my request and flew out to Afton on a Saturday and we toured the mine.

I can recall advising him (and I think the number has changed)  “I have 272 jobs associated with this mine and most live in Star Valley. I need your support.”

At the end of the day, driving back to the airport, he said, “Dan, you have my support.”

There are countless other examples with other elected officials, locally and as I have traveled to Cheyenne and purchased plane tickets for one day-runs to Washington D.C. — all working on maters related to Star Valley, Lincoln County and Wyoming and seeking an elected officials support.

Regardless of the outcome of the elections, ultimately I want people in office that will continue to give me that support when I come calling at their door.
