ORIGINAL: An avalanche has forced the closure of Highway 89 through the Snake River Canyon from Alpine to Hoback Junction. The snow slide occurred at roughly 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon at milepost 122, which is just a few miles east of Alpine. WYDOT issued the closure shortly after. As of 3:20 p.m. WYDOT reports that the road remains closed in both directions with no estimated reopening time. Updates will be provided here as they become available.
At 3:30 p.m. Lincoln County Dispatch said they do not believe any vehicles were caught in the avalanche, but said the canyon “will be closed for a while.”
