The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) is still searching for a missing driver who was involved in a rollover accident in the Greys River area on Saturday evening.

A single vehicle rolled down an embankment more than 100 feet causing multiple injuries and necessitated a life flight for one passenger to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center (EIRMC).

The driver left the scene of the accident and is being sought by officials in regards to the incident. Sheriff Shane Johnson stated that they do not believe the individual poses any threat to the public at this time.

The accident took place approximately nine miles from Alpine. The vehicle is not registered to either the missing driver or the passenger as it is registered to a female while both the missing driver and the injured passenger are males.

Sheriff Johnson provided an update on Tuesday morning.

“We received some calls about a vehicle involved in a 100-foot drop so we headed up there along with medical personnel,” he said. “We found a vehicle that had gone off the side. The passenger was ejected and sustained some pretty significant injuries. The driver had left the area of the accident which is problematic and troubling for us. We are still int ehe process of identifying that individual.”

The passenger has been interviewed by officials but obstacles exist that are hampering the process.

“The passenger is not being totally cooperative in efforts to gain information,” Johnson continued. “There is also a language barrier so we are working on using a translator and that slows down the investigation. We are still looking for other vehicles who may have seen the driver leave the scene. The driver is a suspect in a crime at this point. We have the registration of the vehicle out of Idaho but we do not believe it is registered to the individuals who were in the vehicle. There was alcohol involved and an attempt was made to hide some of those bottles and empty containers.”

Despite the challenges, Sheriff Johnson is confident in an eventual outcome.

“We don’t believe there is a threat but it’s possible that he’s injured,” he added. “We do believe that he was given a ride out of the area by someone who helped him flee the scene of the accident. We believe they are based out of Idaho so we are still following up with that investigation. I’m confident that we will find out who it is, it just may take some time.”

The LCSO is asking the public to contact them with any information that would help them find the missing driver by contacting them at 307-885-5231.

The Alpine Fire Department as well as the LCSO responded to the scene.
