• Horse Fire is 70% contained, lightning strikes resulted in eight additional fires
The Horse Fire, currently spanning 2,797 acres in western Sublette County, is now 70% contained as firefighting efforts continue. The primary objective remains the full suppression of the fire, with 69 personnel actively engaged in containment operations.
Firefighters are focused on reinforcing containment lines and extinguishing lingering hotspots. However, recent rain has created muddy conditions, complicating their efforts. Safety remains the top priority as crews evaluate areas for repair and identify opportunities for trail restoration where feasible.
In the South Horse Creek Drainage, rehabilitation efforts are underway to restore trails to their pre-fire condition and repair damaged terrain. Crews are using infrared flight mapping to locate and address heat sources around Prospect Ridge, proactively working to prevent any fire spread beyond the established perimeter.
Over the past week, the East Zone of the Bridger-Teton National Forest, which includes the Big Piney and Pinedale areas, experienced 2,831 lightning strikes. Fire crews are remaining vigilant, patrolling for new ignitions, and ready to initiate suppression as necessary. It’s important to note that lightning can leave behind smoldering pockets that may ignite into wildfires days after the initial strike.
The Prospect Peak Lookout Tower will remain protected with fire-resistant wrap for the rest of the 2025 fire season, ensuring its safety and preservation.
At 6:00 AM on Monday, July 7, the Horse Fire transitioned back to the local unit for continued management.
The Wyoming Type 3 Teams extend their sincere appreciation to the community for its continued support during the response to the Horse Fire. For further updates and resources, visit InciWeb.
