The Alpine Town Mayor and Council approved Amy Wierda as a new member of the town council. She was approved and ratified for the position at the July 2 meeting where it was noted she has served in several Alpine community organizations. She replaces Emily Castillo, who resigned early with approximately 18 months left in that term.

Wierda will take the oath of office at the July 15 at the Town Council meeting.

Water system

Mayor Eric Green reviewed the process of working through a broken water line at the first July meeting and in a subsequent interview with SVI Media.

He explained the electronic town municipal water system alerted the town maintenance department of a pressure problem Thursday, June 26, at 10 p.m.

Repairs to a broken line were repaired by mid-day Friday.

With pressure lost in the line, a mandatory Environment Protection Agency (EPA) boil notice was issued.

Follow-up water tests were submitted to the EPA on Friday, Saturday and Monday and the tests results allowed the boil water advisory to be lifted early in the week.

Cases of bottled water were made available to the Alpine community and public visiting the area through a distribution point at the Alpine Fire Department during the town boil notice.

At the July 2, town council meeting, Mayor Green offered a “huge Thank You” to the town utility department and all who helped during the process of correcting the water line break and restoring full service.

Ordinances

The following ordinances and resolutions were approved at the July 2 meeting.

• 2025-0011, approved on second reading, addresses land use and development code changes in Alpine for short term rentals for parking and trash removal.

• 2025-024 is a resolution approving extended building permits under planning and zoning.

• 2025-025 included a motion to authorized staff to work with the Public Service Commission on setting utility rates.

• 2025-026  approved an open seat to be filled on the town council.

• 2025-22 is an addendum for employee compensation with sick leave.

Mountain Days

“Alpine Mountain Days went over great,” the mayor concluded. “It was the biggest and best yet.”

He added, “We are really happy with how the whole event came together.”

Mayor Green suggested the event may need a larger space in the future. “We always want to improve as much as we can,” he said.
