U.S. Forest Service Revision Plan

One of the primary topics discussed was the U.S. Forest Service’s Revision Plan, which has been in development for several years. “We’re trying to stay in constant contact with them as one of the cooperating agencies,” Shumway explained. The draft assessment, a critical first step in updating the forest plan, outlines the current ecological, social, and economic conditions of the Bridger-Teton Forest. Public comments are now open, with several upcoming open houses for community interaction, including one scheduled for August 7 in Big Piney and one on August 21 in Alpine.

Logging Permits in Bridger-Teton

Shumway also addressed the unique logging permits being issued in the Bridger-Teton area. Recent timber sales include a substantial Little Spring salvage sale and an Allen Slide rock sale, both of which are aimed at larger projects. In addition, smaller permits for hobbyists looking for lumber or firewood are available, allowing individuals to utilize timber from designated areas.

Afton-Lincoln County Airport Grant Funding

In a significant development for local infrastructure, the commission recently approved FAA grant funding to expand the taxi lane at the Afton-Lincoln County Airport. The two-part grant will cover the entire cost of the $459,000 project, marking a positive step in enhancing local aviation facilities.

Strawberry Road Construction Update

Shumway provided an update on the Strawberry Road realignment project near the Narrows area. With final grading complete, paving is set to commence in early August. This project aims to improve safety and traffic flow in a historically close around the bend area. Future expansions, including possible park-and-ride facilities, are also being considered.

TerraPower Construction Permit

Shumway discussed the ongoing construction by TerraPower, which is currently building a training center south of Kemmer. A public comment period is now open for an additional construction permit related to the nuclear facility, which can be submitted through the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s website until August 4.

Septic Tank Dumping in Lincoln County

In light of ongoing concerns regarding septic tank dumping, Shumway noted that the county has been actively studying the issue for the past year. Collaboration with local cities and commercial septic pumping companies is ongoing, with preliminary findings indicating a possible partnership with Leisure Valley to assist with immediate needs.

Courthouse Expansion

Lastly, Shumway highlighted the recent groundbreaking for the district courthouse expansion in Kemmerer, aimed at addressing ADA compliance issues. This project, funded through years of careful budgeting, is set to enhance the security and convenience of the facility, providing better access to justice for the community.
