CHEYENNE (WNE) — Air Force authorities have arrested an airman in connection with the July 20 death of another service member, Airman Brayden Lovan.
Though initial reports of the 21-year-old’s death indicated that Lovan died after suffering fatal wounds from the misfiring of a Sig Sauer M18, further investigation has led to the arrest.
An individual who is suspected of making a false official statement, obstructing justice and committing involuntary manslaughter has been arrested, according to a statement emailed to the Wyoming Tribune Eagle on Monday by 90th Missile Wing Public Affairs Chief of Media Relations Glenn Robertson.
No further information on the person arrested or the investigation was made available Monday, since the investigation is ongoing, according to Robertson.
Lovan was on his first assignment in the 90th Security Forces Squadron, 90th Security Forces Group, at F.E. Warren Air Force Base at the time of his death.
Based on initial reports and out of an “abundance of caution,” Air Force authorities had ordered various safety precautions involving the M18.
This included taking steps to investigate the firearm, and announcing July 24 that Security Forces Combat Arms airmen at all Air Force Global Strike Command bases would conduct 100% inspections of the M18 handguns to identify any immediate safety concerns.
Regardless of the arrest, the suspension remains in place, according to Robertson.
