GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK, WY – On the evening of August 14th, at approximately 5:22 p.m., the Wyoming Highway Patrol was requested to assist with a crash by the Grand Teton National Park Service. The initial investigation found that two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision on Inner Park Loop Road, approximately two miles north of Jenny Lake.
A BMW SUV with five occupants was northbound, while a Nissan Rogue SUV with three occupants was southbound. The BMW is believed to have crossed the centerline, striking the Nissan Rogue head-on. Multiple people were injured in the collision. Two individuals were transported by helicopter from the scene to a medical center in Idaho, while a third person was later flown from Jackson to a nearby medical center.
Driver inattention is being investigated as a possible primary factor in the crash, which closed the road for approximately two hours. The driver of the BMW was cited for failure to maintain lane of travel.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol once again reminds everyone to wear your seatbelt. Initial findings indicate that of the eight people involved in this collision, only two were wearing their seatbelts. Troopers investigating the crash believe injuries would likely have been far less serious if everyone had been wearing their seatbelts.
This remains an active investigation, and details are subject to change as the investigation continues.
