JACKSON (WNE) — Teton County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Jackson man Sunday after a fisherman reported that a white Chevy Tahoe was “driving through” the Gros Ventre River.
The driver appeared intoxicated, the fisherman told deputies, and he had to run out of the vehicle’s way.
Deputies found Christopher Eickhoff, 52, sitting inside the SUV after it became stuck in the Gros Ventre about 5 miles east of the Crystal Creek Campground. The 911 call came in around 2:15 p.m. and, because of the area’s remoteness, deputies enlisted Teton County Search and Rescue to help locate the vehicle.
After meeting with the fisherman who made the call, deputies hiked in and found the vehicle lodged in the water. Eickhoff was still behind the wheel.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies gave repeated commands for him to exit. At first, Eickhoff refused, asking if deputies would climb onto his roof to help him drive the truck out. After several minutes, he complied, got out and moved to safety.
He admitted to using marijuana and hallucinogenic mushrooms before driving. A blood draw was performed, with toxicology results pending.
On Tuesday, Eickhoff made his first court appearance in Teton County Circuit Court on charges of felony driving while under the influence of a controlled substance — his alleged fifth offense in 10 years in Teton County — and misdemeanor drug possession.
Prosecutors seek enhanced penalties based on four prior DUI convictions in Teton County dating back to 2016, adding that Eickhoff also had a 2009 DUI that caused an injury in California.
Felony DUI is punishable by up to seven years in prison, a $10,000 fine, and a lifetime ignition interlock requirement. The possession charge carries up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
