JACKSON (WNE) — A simple expired-plate stop on Snow King Avenue after midnight Sept. 23 turned into one of Jackson’s bigger drug cases this year when officers seized 50 grams of methamphetamine — more than was confiscated in all of last year.
Police arrested the driver, Peter Robert Lawrence, 53, of Washington state, after a drug-sniffing dog alerted officers to possible drugs in the vehicle.
The search uncovered meth, cocaine, crack, marijuana, heroin, fentanyl pills, DMT — a powerful hallucinogen — and a cutting agent, according to court records. A cutting agent is a cheap powder mixed with drugs to dilute them and increase a dealer’s supply.
Investigators also seized suspected tools for selling drugs (scales, packaging and a ledger) along with cash, a handgun Lawrence was carrying, a shotgun in the van, multiple wallets and IDs that don’t belong to him, credit card skimmers and a lock pick set.
Fifty grams of methamphetamine is well above the 3-gram felony threshold in Wyoming. Prosecutors and law enforcement view possession of that much meth as an amount intended for distribution rather than personal use.
In comparison, law enforcement seized a total of 30 grams of methamphetamine in Teton County throughout all of last year.
Prosecutors have charged Lawrence with three felony counts of possession of controlled substances above statutory weight thresholds.
He also faces seven misdemeanors, including possession of heroin, marijuana and DMT; carrying a concealed weapon; interference with a peace officer; and expired registration.
The three felony drug counts are each punishable by up to seven years in prison and a $15,000 fine. The remaining possession charges are high misdemeanors, punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine apiece.
