• Trail removed during highway construction

Alpine is working with Lincoln County and the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) to develop trails to and from the community and the surrounding national forests.

First on the list will be the restoration of an ATV and snowmobile trail that connects the community with the Caribou-Targhee National Forest at McCoy Creek.

The trail was then removed when the Etna North five-lane highway project was constructed in 2021-2022. The highway expansion was completed on U.S. 89 between Etna and Alpine.

A working group met at the Alpine Town Hall April 25. The meeting included representatives from Alpine, Lincoln County, the Wyoming Legislature, WYDOT, and the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.

“The plan to put the trail to McCoy Creek back in place is to give WYDOT time to access the damage to the embankment on the side of Highway 89 by the wildlife viewing area,” explained Alpine Mayor Eric Green. He advised WYDOT will be working on a plan to divert water from this area to help avoid erosion on the side of the road and trail.

In the meantime, the mayor said Lincoln County is working on a plan that would add trails to and from the forests around Alpine.

This work will be included in the Alpine Master Plan, now being prepared.

“We will be designating areas for additional multi modal trails throughout the area,” Mayor Green concluded.
