Annual Coat Drive is collecting winter gear through October 31

As cooler months approach, community members are asked to keep all their gently used winter clothing and donate to this year’s Coat Drive through October 31 with the free winter items available on November 7.

Those who donate are not limited to coats. Organizers are asking for coats, boots, gloves, scarves, snow pants, and hats.

“Every donation, used or new items, gives us one more item to put directly into the hands of someone who can use it. It’s a simple way to help a neighbor and show our community that they are cared for. The more we have the more we can give away,” said organizer Alison Rainey.

This is the fourth year for the coat drive, providing coats and other winter gear to families at no cost. Rainey said the rising cost of everyday expenses can make purchasing winter clothing another financial burden for families.

“The cost of just about everything has gone up, and we know families are feeling it. A winter coat/outdoor gear are just one more expense. This coat drive is simply our way of taking one thing off someone’s plate and providing a little relief where we can,” Rainey said.

In previous years, between 100 and 250 people have come to get winter gear from the drive. New coats in all sizes as well as boots, both new and gently used, are consistently in high demand.

How to donate:

Collection boxes have been placed at Broulims in Afton at the customer service desk, the Thayne Senior Center, the Etna Community Center conference room as well as the Alpine Post Office.

Distribution:

Anyone in need of winter gear may go to the Thayne Community Center on November 7 any time from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Items are free.

The drive is sponsored by Morning Star Baptist Church in partnership with Alpine Christian Fellowship, Bomgaars, New Hope Fellowship, River of Life and Star Valley United.
