The start of the 2025 tourist season has now seen its first bison incident inYellowstone National Park. According to park officials, a 47-year old man from Cap Coral, Florida was gored by a bison on Sunday, May 4.

“At approximately 3:15 p.m. in the Lake Village area of the park, a man was gored by a bison after he approached it too closely,” a statement from officials said. “The individual sustained minor injuries and was treated by emergency medical personnel. The incident is currently under investigation and no further details are available at this time.”

While this is the first such incident in 2025, the unfortunate interactions between people and bison in the park is a near annual occurrence with two reported such interactions in 2024 and one in 2023. Bison have injured more people than any other animal in Yellowstone and according to experts can run three times faster than humans.

Officials are asking visitors to use a proper distance while observing animals in the park such as the graphic below.
