• Uniting hunters and communities to combat hunger across Wyoming

In the heart of Wyoming, where majestic landscapes and rich hunting traditions thrive, a powerful movement is taking shape to combat hunger. The Food from the Field program is transforming the way hunters connect with their communities, turning successful harvests into vital resources for those in need. Launched in 2020, this innovative initiative has already donated over 50,000 pounds of wild game meat to local food pantries, creating a lifeline for vulnerable populations and inviting more hunters to join in this impactful mission.

“By taking our wild harvest from big game animals and providing it to those in Wyoming, we can help fight hunger,” says Anji Bruce, Director of Wyoming Game and Fish. This collaborative effort brings together the Wyoming Hunger Initiative, the Wyoming Game & Fish Department, the Wyoming Department of Agriculture, and local meat processors, all working in unison to streamline the donation process.

The program invites hunters to donate their harvest after a successful hunt. While hunters are encouraged to contribute financially to cover processing costs, the Wyoming Hunger Initiative ensures that no meat goes to waste by covering the remaining expenses. This means that even those who may not have the funds can still participate, as the processing of the meat is fully supported by previous donations.

Hunters across Wyoming can easily donate their deer, elk, or moose at participating processors, including Star Valley Meat Block & Cold Storage LLC in Thayne and Salt River Meat Co in Afton. Each animal is tested for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) to ensure the safety of the meat before it enters the food bank system.

In a state known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich hunting traditions, Food From The Field not only fosters a sense of community but also helps address food insecurity. Volunteers run the entire operation, demonstrating the power of collective action in tackling local challenges.

As the program continues to grow, it stands as a testament to what can be achieved when individuals come together for a common cause. Hunger is a problem that can be solved, and in Wyoming, Food From The Field is leading the charge. Join the effort and help make a difference in the lives of your neighbors.
