On Tuesday, March 10, Lincoln County Sheriff Shane Johnson and Star Valley Search & Rescue Commander Matt McMurdo visited the SVI Radio studio to discuss an exciting fundraiser aimed at benefiting both the Star Valley and Lincoln County Search & Rescue units. The highlight of this fundraiser is a raffle for a VIP package to this year’s Kentucky Derby, generously provided by the Fishing Dog Foundation.

During the interview, Sheriff Johnson shared how the idea for the fundraiser came about, emphasizing the urgent need for new vehicles to assist in search and rescue operations. “At least a year ago, we recognized the need… for a new vehicle to haul their equipment to emergency situations where they’re saving lives,” he explained.
He continued, “We decided to get creative… we were able to secure a trip to the Kentucky Derby, all expenses paid. It’s not just tickets; it’s a whole experience.” Proceeds from the sale of raffle tickets will go directly toward purchasing two new trucks, one for each unit, to help them better serve the community.
“100% of what’s spent on these tickets will go to that,” Sheriff Johnson stated, making it clear that all funds raised will support the purchase of the much-needed equipment.
Commander McMurdo elaborated on how the new trucks will enhance their capabilities. “The new trucks will help us tow the trailers… so we can get to these rescues with all our equipment in a timely fashion,” he noted. The cost for each truck is estimated at around $90,000, with an additional $35,000 needed for equipment.
McMurdo shared the busy nature of their work, noting, “So far this year, we’ve had nine calls… and Lincoln is sitting at around four or five.” He added that these calls occur year-round, underscoring the necessity for reliable vehicles.
The raffle prize includes a four-day, three-night stay for two at the Marriott Griffin Gate Resort in Lexington, Kentucky, along with meals, a hat design session, and a tour of a horse farm. “This really is the whole …VIP experience,” Sheriff Johnson said, emphasizing the exclusivity of the prize. The drawing will take place live during the Weekday Wake-Up on Friday, April 17.
Tickets can be purchased through various outlets, including the Fishing Dog Foundation’s website and local search and rescue unit members. “There’s a QR code that makes it really simple,” Johnson added, encouraging participation from the community.
Sheriff Johnson stressed the importance of community involvement, stating, “When those trucks go by responding to an emergency, and you recognize that you were a part of equipping that unit… that’s a big deal too.”
This initiative not only offers a chance to win a dream trip but also serves a greater purpose by providing essential resources for lifesaving missions in Lincoln County. For more details about the raffle and how to buy tickets, visit FishingDogFoundation.org.
