I have always wanted to attend Alpine’s Thanksgiving dinner as  I was impressed with how the community came together for their neighbors.

I wrote stories about it for SVI but was unable to attend in recent years as we used that time to take my wife’s mother out for a Thanksgiving dinner near her Seattle home.

Another family was assisting my mother-in-law, so this year I as able to attend the Alpine event and thought I might help set up. However, when I arrived at the Donn Wooden Civic Center in the morning, the earlier risers had already showed up and had the tables and chairs in place for a large gathering.

Still another nice couple had seen some of SVI’s earlier stories and were helping to set up the serving area.

I came back later to watch the volunteers from the Top of the Rockies Snowmobile Club coordinate a well prepared event.

I was impressed with how Top of the Rockies has evolved from a snowmobile group to a community service organization in so many ways and they are good at how they plan and take care of Alpine.

Dinner was served in an orderly fashion and conversation with neighbors carried the day.

Multiple big screens were placed around the room and offered early football entertain with the Lions – Bears game, for those wanting football with their Thanksgiving dinner. Don’t the Lions always play on Thanksgiving? I was even sidetracked to watch the finish of that game.

Watching all of this Thanksgiving event unfold, I was probably most impressed with how they took care of their neighbors who could not attend the community dinner for various reasons, such as physical limitations or simply the requirement of working on Thanksgiving Day.

A group of people, had a list of meal deliveries and they were “checking it twice!”

Before food was served at the center, deliveries were coordinated and sent out to those who could not join.

My conclusion, how thoughtful to remember all your neighbors at Thanksgiving!

Good work Top of the Rockies, Good work Alpine!
