Rep. McKay Erickson (R-Afton), representing House District 21 in Star Valley, joined the Weekday Wake-Up last Thursday to discuss the latest developments from the Wyoming Legislature in Cheyenne. During the interview, he focused on property tax and education bills, as well as other pressing legislative items.

One of the major topics was Senate File 69, which proposes a 50% cut in property taxes. Erickson expressed enthusiasm about the legislative process, stating, “It was sure neat to see the legislative process.” He highlighted the need for careful amendments to ensure a smoother transition for communities relying on these funds. “We’re hoping we are heading things a little more in the right direction for that,” he noted, while acknowledging concerns about the potential impact on services funded by these taxes.

Erickson mentioned that amendments to Senate File 69 might include provisions for backfilling lost revenue, though he cautioned that the bill’s details remain fluid. He also commented on a recent ballot amendment, supported by Senator Barlow, which allows for different taxation methods. This could shift some tax burdens from primary residences to second homes, a change Erickson finds promising.

Additionally, Erickson discussed fire mitigation efforts for electric cooperatives. He praised the passage of a bill aimed at protecting these cooperatives from fire-related liabilities, emphasizing its importance for maintaining stable electric rates in the region.

Turning to education, Erickson expressed concern over recent attempts to undermine public education in favor of private and charter schools. “I didn’t like the idea of burning down something that has served us really well to build up something new,” he remarked, emphasizing ongoing efforts in the House Education Committee to stabilize public education.

Lastly, Erickson highlighted Senate File 139, which he is working on with Senator Dan Dockstader, which addresses trapping regulations at crowded trailheads, aiming to reduce conflicts between wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts. “It’s a great bill that works out good for both sides,” he concluded.

As the legislative session progresses over the next three weeks, Erickson remains committed to advocating for the needs of his constituents in Star Valley.
