It’s fitting that someone with the last name “Bass” would make angling history. Tucker Bass, 12, of Shoshoni, has officially set a new world record recognized by the International Game Fish Association.

On Aug. 9, 2025, Bass landed a 2-pound, 4-ounce largemouth bass from Lake Cameahwait — also known locally as Bass Lake — near Shoshoni. The catch earned him the Junior 4-pound Line Class world record, approved by the IGFA in November 2025.

Bass is currently the only largemouth bass world-record holder from Wyoming.

He was fishing with his dad, John, in a two-person kayak when he made the record-setting catch. Bass hooked the fish on a rod and reel gifted by his grandfather, using a Northland tungsten jig typically designed for ice fishing.

In addition to his world record, Bass achieved Trophy Angler status in August through the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Master Angler program. He has also completed four of six challenges in the department’s Youth Fishing Challenge.

“This is an exceptional accomplishment for a young angler,” said Joe Deromedi, Lander Region fisheries supervisor. “Tucker’s record highlights not only his skill and dedication, but also the quality fishing opportunities we have in central Wyoming. It’s always exciting to see youth developing a lifelong passion for fishing.”

Wyoming’s overall state record largemouth bass remains the 11.51-pound fish caught by Caleb Salzman of Meeteetse at Kleenburn Ponds near Sheridan on May 10, 2018. Salzman’s fish measured 24.5 inches long with a 20.75-inch girth.
