He elaborated on the assessment phase of the revision plan, explaining that it serves as a “snapshot in time” to evaluate the overall condition of the forest and identify trends over time. Shumway underscored the urgency of updating the plan, noting that the current phase involves gathering essential data through monthly calls and collaboration with conservation districts, neighboring counties, and state forestry officials. As the process transitions from assessment to public involvement, he anticipates increased community engagement.

The commissioner emphasized the importance of utilizing the best scientific methods for ecological and plant reviews, stating, “We want to be heavily involved in this and ensure that we are utilizing our natural resources as best we can.” This commitment is a central objective of the ongoing assessment.

Shumway also highlighted exciting developments in trail improvements across southern Lincoln County. Notably, enhancements at Big Springs, located above Cokeville, will include upgraded parking facilities, boardwalks, picnic tables, a viewing platform, and the installation of a vault toilet. This multiyear project aims to enhance accessibility and enjoyment for residents and visitors alike.

Expressing enthusiasm for the progress being made, Shumway believes these initiatives will positively impact the community. The Forest Revision Plan and the trail improvements reflect Lincoln County’s dedication to preserving and enhancing its natural resources for future generations.
