ROCK SPRINGS — The Wyoming Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly crash between two semi-trucks that happened last week just east of Green River on Interstate 80.

At 5:23 a.m. on Feb. 8th, troopers were dispatched to a crash at mile marker 94 of I-80 eastbound. Troopers arrived to find a semi had struck the trailer of another semi-truck and burst into flames.

The investigation revealed a Freightliner combination unit was parked illegally on the south shoulder of the eastbound lanes of I-80 near mile marker 94. An eastbound Volvo combination unit drifted onto the shoulder and impacted the trailer of the Freightliner. The impact ruptured the fuel tank of the Volvo, causing a significant fire in the Volvo’s cab.

The driver and passenger of the Volvo, identified as Aleksey Fedun, 36, of Citrus Heights, California, and Volodymyr Fedun, 74, of Citrus Heights, California respectively, both died on scene. The driver of the parked semi-truck was not injured.

Both eastbound lanes of I-80 were closed during the response and investigation starting at 5:30 a.m. The lanes were reopened at 10 a.m.

Driver inattention and possible fatigue are being looked at as contributing factors in a deadly crash.

This crash brings deaths on Wyoming’s roadways to 11 in 2026, compared to 6 in 2025 and 2 in 2024.
