Seat belt use is being credited for minimizing what could have been more severe injuries in a head-on collision in the Snake River Canyon on Tuesday morning. The incident took place at approximately 9:15 a.m. at mile post 123.5 on US 89/26.

After many weeks without snow, winter conditions were on display in the early morning hours with steady snow and limited visibility.

According to information provided by the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP), improper lane use and adverse weather conditions as factors. The two vehicles involved were a GMC Yukon SUV and a Subaru SUV.

“One vehicle drifted into the oncoming traffic lane and then overcorrected and by the time they hit it was a straight head-on,” said WHP Trooper Wallace Schulthess.

According to Alpine Fire Chief, Mike Vogt, his department responded to the scene which took some time as a wrecker from Afton was dispatched to help clear the area.

Both drivers were transported to the Star Valley Health facility in Alpine. One of the drivers was later transported to Idaho for further care.

Citations from the WHP were handed out for improper lane use and no insurance with one of the vehicles.

Trooper Schulthess noted that both drivers were locals who utilize the route often.

“Both drivers use that road almost daily,” he said. We would just remind people to be extra attentive during adverse weather conditions and don’t be lax in your attention even if you’re familiar with the road. You never know when someone might wind up in your lane.”

The trooper also added that both drivers were wearing seatbelts and it minimized the injuries sustained.

“This could have been much more serious without the use of seatbelts,” he said.

The incident remains under the investigation by the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
